College can be stressful and expensive. That's why organizations like the Stars Scholarship Fund exist -- to give students a little bit of financial relief.

Scholarships are a fantastic thing. The best part about them is that you can apply for as many as you're qualified for.

As a senior in high school, I applied for every scholarship that I possibly could. Even a small amount of money will help.

But, before you figure out if you're qualified for the Stars scholarship, you may be wondering what exactly the Stars scholarship is.

The Stars Scholarship Fund is a non-profit organization based in McAllen, Texas. Stars offers various scholarships to students in South and West Texas who are working toward a degree at an accredited college or university.

The Stars Scholarship Fund's mission statement is as follows:

"Stars Scholarship Fund is dedicated to providing successful futures for local students. Stars Scholarship Fund was established to offer students an opportunity for advancement in higher education. Scholarships provide deserving students the ability to achieve success at the college or university of their choice."

Stars offers scholarships ranging from $350 to $10,000. They determine the amount based on the college or university that you are attending.

The Stars Scholarship Fund will even grant scholarships to universities, such as when they gifted a $100,000 scholarship to Texas A&M International University.

Stars Scholarship: Application Criteria

To apply for a Stars scholarship, there are various qualifications that you must have. First, you must be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident. You also need to be a permanent resident (5 or more consecutive years) of one of their 30 counties in South or West Texas and have a permanent address there.

Next, you need to have completed a high school diploma or its equivalent before the new academic year in fall.

Then, you must have already earned or completed at least 12 undergraduate credit hours at a U.S. accredited college or university before you apply for the scholarship. You must also have a minimum college cumulative GPA of at least 2.7 on a 4.0 scale.

Finally, it is required that you are enrolled in one of the following:

  • Two-year community college (part-time or full-time) seeking a degree
  • Four-year university undergraduate program (full-time) seeking a Bachelor's degree
  • University graduate program (full-time) seeking a Master's, Law degree, or Doctorate

How do Stars select recipients?

Stars reviews every single application and the accompanying documents. When doing so, they enter all information into their system and assign each one a score. The score is based on quantitative information provided, such as GPA and earned hours.

From there, Stars creates a preliminary list of recipients and talks with the applicant's school to confirm their academic progress and financial need.
