Students across the country work hard to earn top marks, dreaming of the college they’ll attend and the education they’ll receive. Unfortunately, many of these students won’t be able to afford it. That is where McDonald’s comes in with their scholarships. McDonald’s corporate objective is to, “give back to the best and brightest of the communities that it is immersed in.” For almost three decades, McDonald’s has offered a variety of scholarships to hardworking and community-oriented students. Since 1985, the scholarship initiative has provided over $44 million in financial resources for deserving low-income college students. The McDonald’s scholarship offers the perfect opportunity to find another way of getting assistance for your college dreams. Students attempting to pay for higher education are better off when they know and understand the McDonald’s scholarship programs available.
What Is the McDonald’s Scholarship Program?
The McDonald’s Scholarship program is offered by the charity arm of the company, called the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). This philanthropic arm of the McDonald’s Corporation provides comfortable and free accommodations for families who must travel to seek medical care for children. Through the network of US chapters of the RMCH, additional efforts are aimed at other groups, including college students, offering the RMHC National Scholarship Program. The program’s stated mission is to help students realize their full scholastic potential, despite economic hardship. The scholarships are open to all students who meet the eligibility requirements.
Who Qualifies for the Scholarship?
There is a McDonald’s scholarship offered to current employees, which recognizes the accomplishments of outstanding students in the course of their employment at McDonald’s. In addition to the employee scholarship, there are several other McDonald’s scholarships available. The RMHC Asia scholarship is an option if you have one parent of Asian or Pacific-Islander heritage, while those of you who have one parent of African-American or Black Caribbean heritage can apply for the RMHC African-American scholarship. The RMHC HACER scholarship is available if you have at least one parent who is Hispanic or Latino. The RMHC Scholars is open to all students, regardless of background, race, creed, col-
or, religion, sexual orientation, gender, disability or applicant’s country of origin. You can get more information by contacting your local RMHC

How to Apply?
It’s easy to apply for McDonald’s scholarships, if you know where to find the information. There are several additional items which should be included when submitting an application for the McDonald’s scholarship. Here are additional items you need to include with the application to try to get the McDonald’s scholarship:
The applications for the McDonald’s scholarships are available online from October to January. Students can upload supporting documents directly via the online application, or if they are unable to submit the information online, they can also mail in the supporting documents. However, all applicants should make sure they follow the directions because incomplete applications will not be considered. It’s also a good idea to submit the mailed applications via certified mail so applicants can receive notification of when their materials arrive for processing. Once an application is processed, which can take several weeks, applicants can view their status on the application home page. Deadlines and other application requirements are unique to the chapters that administer awards, but generally applications are completed online after October 1st, and must be postmarked before December 20th. Applicants are notified regarding their scholarship information the following spring, either in May or June.
To be considered for a local chapter scholarship, students must reside within a Ronald McDonald House Charities program’s geographic area. Some of the markets encompass extensive geographic areas that include locations in more than one state. Additional information is available on the RMHC website. While RMHC offers four scholarship programs, students may only apply for one. If your local RMHC does not one of the four McDonald’s scholarships detailed above, they may offer other awards you can apply for. Checks will typically be made out directly to your school, although this may vary by RMHC chapter. Funds can be applied to tuition, fees, books, and supplies. Money applied to room & board charges may be subject to taxes. Recipients of the scholarship are responsible for enrolling as full-time undergraduates in the fall of the year in which the scholarship is received.
Everyone knows that paying for college is a major ordeal for some prospective college students and their families. There are numerous scholarships available, as well as federal funding and grants, which can go a long way to assist a student in chasing their dreams. The requirements for each of the McDonald’s scholarships are basically the same, with only a difference or two in the requirements. The great thing about these McDonald’s scholarships is that they are gifts; they don’t need to be repaid. Any student who is interested in receiving money to help pay for school, without having to pay it back, should consider applying. McDonald’s scholarships afford students the opportunity to reach their dreams, if they are willing to work for them. It’s something that no one will be able to take away from them.
A scholarship will affect your other student aid because all your student aid added together can’t be more than your cost of attendance at your college or career school. So you’ll need to let your school know if you’ve been awarded a scholarship so that the financial aid office can subtract that amount from your cost of attendance.
