Elks Scholarship: Criteria
Elks prides themselves on being a charitable fraternity, but multiple criteria go into applying for one of their scholarships. They want to make sure the scholarships are going to deserving individuals.
For starters, undergraduate students are the only people eligible for these. If you receive an Elks scholarship, they make the check out directly to your school. They will not make any exceptions to this.
If you leave school or terminate any of your courses, you must return the remainder of the scholarship to the Elk Foundation's office in Chicago. You cannot transfer it to a different school or you directly.
You can use an Elks scholarship toward a study abroad program, but it has to be through an accredited U.S. institution. It can't pay for a third-party program.
Types Of Scholarships Offered
The Elks Foundation offers four different types of scholarships:
Most Valuable Student
This is a scholarship awarded each year. Elks gives out four-year scholarships to the top 500 applicants, based on financial need, scholarship, and leadership.
It is open to every high school student who is a U.S. citizen. Additionally, you cannot apply for this Elks scholarship if you are related to a member of the fraternity.
This scholarship ranges from $1,000 per year to $12,500 per year. You must be pursuing a full-time four-year degree.
Finally, for this award, the top 20 finalists go on to a Leadership Weekend in Chicago, where they interview with national judges to compete with each other for the top awards.
Legacy Awards are the scholarships available to children and grandchildren of Elks members.
The Elks Foundation gives out 300 Legacy Awards in a single year. They break up 250 of these throughout the different states in the U.S., with larger states having more than smaller ones. They give the remaining 50 to the top applicants, regardless of the state where they live.
This Elks scholarship is for eligible high school seniors who have applied to U.S. accredited schools, colleges, or universities. You also must have taken the SAT or ACT before applying.
However, if you receive a Legacy Award, you're required to perform service once per year with an Elks Lodge during the four years that you receive the scholarship.
Emergency Educational Grants
Children of deceased or disabled Elks members who are seeking undergraduate financial assistance are eligible for these grants.
The amount of this Elks scholarship varies based on your application but ranges up to $5,000.
Many factors go into the eligibility of this grant. Eligible students can apply for up to four of these grants throughout their undergraduate education.
Weigel Medical School Scholarship
Named after Gunther and Lee Weigel, this is a $24,000 Elks scholarship specifically for those pursuing a medical degree or Osteopathic Medicine degree.
Eligible recipients of these eight-year scholarships are current or former Elks scholarship recipients entering their first year of medical school.
